LIFT ME UP | NICK HAKIM | TRACK OF THE DAY

Nick’s debut ‘Cold’ made him our artist of the week last month and now we’re treated to his next gorgeous release ‘Lift Me Up.’

The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter was picked to open a handful of dates supporting neo-soul legend Maxwell earlier this summer and has more live dates below, including a New York residency this August as well as a variety of European shows. He’s been praised for his unique mix of blues, soul and a bit of R&B with SPIN loving his “warm, soulful” sound while Blackbook dug his “icy touch of R&B groove” and Pigeons and Planes noted how recent single “Cold” was “further proof of his undeniable talents.” Sessions with Yours Truly and Daytrotter speak to his ability to strip away the layers and showcase his raw talent and blues-tinged emotional range, and his new EP is yet another look at this immensely talented young artist.

Raised in Washington, D.C. in a household overflowing with musical diversity ranging from soul, hip-hop, go-go, folk music and more from his Chilean and Peruvian parents, it comes as no surprise that Nick tends to blend genres, mixing the ambient airy sound of psychedelic, with the raw gut-wrenching emotion of the blues. He performs a broad range of the instruments heard on the EP alongside shared production duties, with an early admiration for Marvin Gaye and Harry Nilsson seeping through these introductory recordings. The vulnerability of Nick’s vocals, intimate and silken, is a powerful instrument in its own right that never pushes itself to excess.
