My Mum Taught Me – Style

In March the UK honours ones own mother, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds and the overall influence of mothers in society.

New Look suggested we go one step further and hone in on the style of our mother figures for their #MyMumTaughtMe campaign. To me this was the chance to show off my personal style icon– the sassy woman who passed on two types of genes, including DNA and denim.

Since I was younger my mum showed me the world through her eyes – it’s thanks to her that I’ve become the culture vulture that I am today. Most weekends were spent in art galleries, cinemas and theatres, where I would be exposed to historic and current fashion inspiration.

I guess all my inherited popular culture knowledge has subliminally guided my existing style choices. It’s only since looking back at photographs of my mum when she was my age that I realised I really am a cloned walking wardrobe.

To celebrate my mum’s style influence I have merged two of my favourite photographs including outfits of her around the same age as me, but in the 80’s. Her lace wedding dress and summer denim photograph has been reworked in my outfit with a Cream Crochet Gypsy Crop Top from New Look along with Black Ripped Mom Shorts. Thanks mum for giving me my sense of style – Happy Mother’s day, now let’s go shopping!
